Pumba Water Lodge is a five star luxury retreat overlooking the lovely Lake Kariega in Pumba Private Game Reserve. The reserve is home to the Big Five - and with a high concentration of animals, your chances of spotting them are quite high. Pumba means 'warthog' in Swahili and there are countless of these delightful creatures roaming the bush.

The lodge's rustic appearance belies the sophisticated and detailed luxury within. There are 12 thatched, stonewalled chalets to choose from, each with a private deck overlooking Lake Kariega. There are the Impala Chalets, Gemsbok Chalets and the Kudu Suite offers the utmost in luxury. All rooms are air-conditioned, have indoor and outdoor showers and a fireplace, as well as a private plunge pool. Animals often meander their way between the rooms so prepare yourself for a wild experience! The dining area and terrace opens out onto the lake with quite superlative views. There is a lovely sun deck to catch a tan, a communal swimming pool and a cocktail bar which is right on the lake's shores. There is an 18-seater conference room so Pumba can cater for business or functions such as weddings.

Great game viewing and activities

Pumba Private Game Reserve covers 6000 hectares and hosts the Big Five. Due to the relative smallness of the reserve, there is a high density of animals and you are quite likely to spot the Big Five in a few days. Plus there is also the chance to see the rare white lion which has made this reserve its home. The vegetation is a mixture of the Eastern Cape's dense valley bushveld favoured by the elephant and the grassland that is enjoyed by the plains animals.

The lodge itself overlooks Lake Kariega and offers stunning views of the wilderness and water from every vantage point, with timber decks surrounding each of the chalets and the main lodge. The lake is a natural watering hole which attracts an array of animals which you can spot from your armchair! As well as the Big Five, you can spot 300 bird species and 22 species of antelope, giraffe, warthog and baboons to name a few. Game drives are done in open landrovers with experienced rangers and guided tracking or bush walks are also provided.
