The latest addition to the Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, Kariega River Lodge hangs over the serene Bushmans River shortly before it plunges into the Indian Ocean. Expanding the reserve by 1000 hectares the lodge is an excellent addition to the Kariega portfolio. Kariega River Lodge has ten suites built of wood and thatch. Each suite gazes out over the river and the floodplain beyond. Furnishings are tasteful and the amenities pure luxury.

All rooms have a large en-suite bathroom with free-standing bath and separate shower; luxurious beds; air conditioning; a ceiling fan; satellite TV – if you must; and a mini bar. The main lodge has a large open-deck that overhangs the river and offers sweeping views of the starry night skies over the sweeping flood plain. Fine food and fine wine round off the perfect African safari.

Experience the great African outdoors

Kariega Game Reserve is 9000 hectares of Malaria Free wilderness, which plays home to 25 game species and 280 different types of birds. The reserve is split in two distinct areas. The first area is dedicated to general game and birdlife with game walks, mountain biking, canoeing, sunset cruises, and swimming in the rivers.

The second area is newer and it is here that you can view the Big Five from the safety of the open vehicles. Spot lion and leopard roaming for prey or elephant, rhino and buffalo bludgeoning their way through the bush. In the surrounding area you can enjoy golfing on superb courses or take a trip to the golden beaches of Kenton-On-Sea. Birding along the river and in the reserve is excellent – look out for martial and crowned eagles and the listen for the evocative call of the fish eagle. River Lodge has a host of outdoor activities including game drives, bush walks, mountain bike safaris, river cruises, canoeing safaris and fly-fishing. If that sounds too energetic you can always laze away the day beside the pool.
