A beach house if ever there was one, Periwinkle – after the shells commonly washed ashore in these parts – is a purpose-built guest house adjacent to the Robberg Beach in Plettenberg Bay. Colours are bright and cheery and the décor favours a short attention span; the dining and lounge areas have an impressive arched and bulwarked yellowwood roof that looks like the inside of ship’s bow.

Large windows open onto the balcony which overlooks the sea and Tsitsikamma Mountains. The seven en suite rooms are singly styled and all obey the commanding sea view to varying degrees. Though the log fires won’t go amiss on wintry evenings, each room is decorated with summer in mind – tiled floors, citrus colours and large French doors with floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the terrace and sea beyond.

Periwinkle Guest House: whale watching over breakfast

In the latter half of the year whales often pop in for a breakfast breach so order the continental and carry a pair of binoculars with you. The beach is over the narrow road and access to the reserves, estuaries and game parks is a cinch making Periwinkle a comfortable base that never lets the sea out of its sight. With the same summery décor and casual beachy atmosphere, Periwinkle has a twin in Hermanus – home to the famous Southern Right Whale and much more besides.
