Lily Pond is what you get when an architect – albeit a good one – is given free reign: things like space and light dominate; ornaments enhance; the whole is pleasing to the eye, soothing for the soul and rather worrisome for the bank manager. This last becomes a pleasant surprise for Lily Pond Country Lodge is excellent value to boot. Surrounded by the lush Tsitsikamma Forest and burbling lily ponds, the ten-roomed hotel oozes tranquillity and relaxation. Rooms are spacious and luxurious with French doors that open onto the sumptuous garden-pond-forest tableau.

The stage is set for some mighty feasts and Lily Pond provides. Chef Vincent Jqojqe creates some wild combinations of tastes that are prepared and presented with delight. Around the pool, which reflects the the architecture in more ways than one, is a large deck complete with massage therapy room and a luxurious spa.

The garden surrounding Lily Pond Country Lodge is a combination of order and chaos: white stone, sharp granite edges and geometric shapes are surrounded by enormous lily-strewn ponds and a tangle of indigenous forest beyond. If you have a good book, you'll love time spent lazing beside the pool. If you have a bad book, it won't make much difference. If you have no book, for that matter, it won't make much difference because at Lily Pond, a state of contented torpor is impossible to resist.
