A perfect specimen of the iron-roofed, verandah-wrapped, wood-floored, rose-scented variety of Karoo farmhouse, Hlangana Lodge is a comfortable and charming guest house in the centre of Oudtshoorn. The rooms – 12 standards, 6 superiors and 1 honeymoon suite – have been dressed for high tea with cream scones and chocolate cookies.

All have en suite bathrooms – the standards have either a bath or a shower – and open onto the lush garden. In-room facilities include mini bars, air conditioning and coffee and tea stations. In the Karoo, nothing gets done on an empty stomach and breakfast is a red-blooded feast that will keep you going for days. Snacks and light meals can be arranged if you can’t bear to leave your poolside lounger.

Hlangana Lodge operates a 24-hour reception and a concierge desk that will assist with your day tour planning, restaurant bookings, photo development and anything else you might care to throw at them. There’s a small gym if you simply cannot do without a daily dose of natural endorphins. Being in the centre of Oudtshoorn – and within walking distance of many fine restaurants – Hlangana Lodge is an excellent, and elegant, base camp from which to explore the region’s many attractions.
