For a wildlife safari that you won’t see on the Discovery channel, take a detour on Route 62 and visit Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Klein Karoo – a land of stark beauty and fascinating detail. The reserve has two accommodation options lightly themed on the San people who first roamed the land; both are intimate and exclusive galaxies away from the humdrum.

Tilney Manor has six palatial rooms with exquisite furnishings, private balconies, Victorian baths and outdoor showers. The main house has a luxurious lounge, a splendid pool deck and a spa. Dining is a suitably ostentatious affair and the service and personal attention borders on ridiculous. Khanni Lodge is your typical Karoo house with San overtones. High-ceilings, exposed beams and magnificent verandahs overlook a natural waterhole and meeting place of hundreds of animals. Khanni has just four suites of spaceship proportions, a cosy lounge and dining room and an open game-viewing, sunset-watching, lounging deck with a rim-flow pool.

The reserve’s plants, birds, San rock art, night skies and geological oddities are reason enough to call Sanbona a destination; then we get to the animals. On your game drives and guided hikes you may see lion – including ultra rare white versions -, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, large and small antelope, zebra and wildebeest; small game such as jackal, caracal, aardwolf and hyena provide fascinating side shows to the main act.
