Bay Lodge is an explosion of beige and muted browns that has been pruned into straight lines, flat shapes and some interesting splashes of colour and pattern. This boutique hotel has a stunning view over Plettenberg Bay – known to early explorers as 'The Beautiful Bay' – and the polished down-tempo design lends itself to the tranquil air of elegance that wafts about like the smell of fresh-baked bread.

Six luxurious suites have been fitted with modern amenities, luxurious accessories, plush furniture and stunning views of the beach or the landscaped water-featured garden – or both if you're in the executive suite. Opt for fine dining in the beige dining room and follow it up by relaxing beside the fire in the beige lounge or taking in the sea breeze from the cane furnished balcony. The hotel has a large heated pool and a rooftop jacuzzi with a barbecue gazebo for days of sunshine and bliss.

Bay Lodge: choose your beach

Bay Lodge is a couple of minutes' walk to the famous beaches of Plettenberg Bay – the only problem being which beach to choose. Whichever one you end up on the white sand, lapping waves and temperate water make a day at the beach a mandatory outing and your hosts will pack you off with a picnic lunch, umbrellas, loungers, towels and all – they might stop at applying the sun cream though. The hotel is also close to Robberg Nature Reserve, which has a wonderful rocky trail that skirts the coastline and stops regularly at all the best whale-watching points.
