The most popular time to visit Chobe is between May and October, when it's often combined with a trip to see the
Okavango Delta in flood and/or
Victoria Falls. During the rainy months (the Green Season) from December to February the lodges are quieter and you can take advantage of lower rates.
Did you Know? Botswana is so committed to wildlife preservation and eco-tourism that it turned most of its Army into Game Protection Units. The success of this almost eradicated poaching in Botswana.

The best time for visiting the Kasane Area is in the dry winter months from June to October, when the dry inland forces the animals to congregate around the rivers and permanent water sources. Given that this area is such a short distance from the Zimbabwe border and Victoria Falls, it is ideal to combine with a short visit to the Falls.
The Savute marsh becomes home to thousands of Zebra when they migrate from the Mababe Depression round about May and then return in November. The Savute & Linyanti region is also well known for its Lion population and given the high concentration of plains game in this area, the entire predator population is high.
Summer: November - April, days are hot and generally sunny in the morning with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures can rise to 38ºC and night temperatures drop to around 20ºC - 25ºC. The afternoons can be very humid. The rainy season begins late in October/November and ends in March. The Chobe areas of Northern Botswana receive up to 700mm of rain.
Winter: May - October, days are dry, sunny and cool to warm while evening temperatures drop sharply. Daytime temperatures generally reach 20ºC and can drop to as low as 5ºC at night. Please note that exceptionally cold spells can occur (although this is the exception rather than the rule) so bring appropriate clothing, just in case!
What to Pack
Clothing should be cool and comfortable casual year round. Jerseys and heavier jackets are required in the winter mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on safari. Long sleeves and long trousers are advisable for morning and evenings due to mosquitoes. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential.
Game Viewing
Taken in open safari vehicles and boat cruises into the Chobe National Park. Traditionally early morning game drives and late afternoon boat cruises are safari routine. Elephants are seen in the hundreds and buffalo in the thousands. Lions are seen almost daily as are impala, sable antelope, giraffe, warthog and numerous other species.
Across the Chobe river from Kasane is the flat grassy plains of Sedudu Island, a grazing ground for elephant and which provides a good opportunity to view birds and animals alike from close quarters. With over 450 bird species in the area look out for unusual ones such as the African finfoot and the halfcollared kingfisher.
