Crime is a reality in urban areas the world over, and sadly Cape Town is no exception. We urge you to do some homework, familiarize yourself with Cape Town and be aware of the possible risks. That said, compared to the rest of Africa, Cape Town has a very modern infrastructure.
Should the unthinkable happen, and an emergency strike then you will be reassured to know that Cape Town and South Africa has an excellent infrastructure of hospitals and doctors. We strongly recommend that you take out personal holiday insurance prior to travel , and incase of an emergency do not hesitate to contact your Rhino Africa Travel Consultant.

Crime, a reality of urban areas the world over, remains a concern in South Africa. Therefore it is well worth listening to local advise and exercising caution wherever you are. Sensible precautions and common sense will discourage bad fortune. Although its impossible to be theft proof, safety measures can make it harder for criminals. Some to note :
- Be alert and aware of what is happening around you .
- Avoid drawing attention to yourself with flashy clothes, jewellery, big cameras and large amount of cash. Rather leave these in your hotel’s safety deposit box
- A money belt or pouch inside your clothes is the safest way to carry your passport and daily money allowance.
- Have some loose change easily accessible for casual spending so that you do not have to delve into your money belt in a crowded place.
- Be aware of local scams, eg getting a bad exchange rate ( a small currency converter chart is useful here )
- Get your bearings before you go out so you can walk with confidence and purpose. If you do get lost, get off the street into a shop or restaurant ( where the staff may be able to help you ) before consulting your map. Researching your route also applies to trips by car.
- Whether on foot or in a car, avoid dark isolated areas and preferably do not travel alone.
- Hired cars are popular targets as they are easily identifiable and their drivers are presumed to be carrying a lot of cash. Make sure you keep valuables out of sight in the boot, and avoid leaving anything in the car when parked overnight.
- Keep car doors locked and windows closed, especially at traffic lights.
- Travel long distances during the day if possible and don’t pick up hitch hikers
- Try not to take valuables with you when visiting the beach, as these can disappear in a flash if left briefly unattended or whilst you are dozing
- Only visit townships with a legitimate guide
- In your hotel, always keep your door locked, whether you are there or not, and when going out hand the keys directly to the receptionist rather than leaving them on the desk.
