Kirstenbosch Gardens sprawl over 1310 acres of Table Mountains well watered Southern Slopes. They were founded in 1913 with the express purpose of preserving and propagating South Africa’s rich floral heritage. Today Kirstenbosch Gardens is one of the leading Botanical Gardens in the world, and definitely worth of a visit. During the summer you can enjoy concerts in the grounds of the gardens, pack a picnic and laze on the slopes and listen to the concerts ranging from Classic to Jazz and local rock bands. Dress warm as even during the summer the temperatures can drop and it gets particularly chilly.
Kirstenbosch showcases about 9000 species of flowering plant, among them the Proteas and Ericas of the Cape’s unique fynbos vegetation : disas, bulbs, succulents, ferns, pelargoniums and primeval cycads.
Rhodes Memorial is an unashamedly Imperialistic ‘temple’ that commemorates Cecil John Rhodes a man, who whatever his faults, strode across Africa during the Victorian age. Enjoy tea and scones at the memorial and marvel at the magnificent views.
