Clifton was originally known as Schoenmakers Gat (or Cobblers Cave) after an old shoemaker living in Clifton Caves. He mended shoes of farmers on their way to Cape Town. Around 1890 Schoenmakkers Gat was renamed after the lady who ran the only hotel in the area, Bessie Clifton.

The beaches in Clifton are reached by a steep flights of flights, down from the road, on which parking can often be difficult. You would think that this would deter the crowds, however this is far from the truth. Clifton Beach is at its most popular during the summer months and during the late afternoon when throngs of people head down to the beach to partake in traditional sunsets in the presence of one of Cape Town’s most legendary sunsets.
Cape Town experiences a howling South Easter Wind throughout much of the year, however Clifton Beaches geography ensures that it is protected from the wind.
The four small and beautiful beaches of Clifton are interlinked, with giant granite boulders dividing one from the next. Each individual sandy enclave has its own identity.
Clifton 4th Beach is the busiest beach with the young and beautiful playing volleyball, throwing Frisbees, but mostly trying to look cool. Clifton 3rd Beach is frequented by the gay population of Cape Town, tanned, waxed and extremely buff. Clifton 2nd Beach is the sunning spot of Cape Town Students and young bohemians. Clifton 1st is less popular than the other three.
Its rare to see people braving the cold icy Atlantic Waters. However Yachts, Speedboats and Jet Skis come and play in the bay and it has the atmosphere, if not the warm waters, of the Mediterranean.
