Cape Town is dominated by Table Mountain. Many cities boast landmarks such as bridges and skyscrapers by which to be orientated, very few cities have a mountain 1km high and 3 km wide rising high above the city!
- The main feature of Table Mountain is a level plateau approximately 3 kilometres from side to side
- The plateau is flanked by Devils Peak to the East and Lions Head to the West, forming the dramatic backdrop to Cape Town.
- The highest point of Table Mountain is to the Eastern Side and is 1086 metres above sea level
- The flat top of Table Mountain is often covered by cloud spilling over the top to form the Table Cloth
The Table Mountain Cable Way takes you to the summit in under 10 minutes and the cable cars rotating floor ensures that all passengers get a 360 degree aerial view of the city. The Cable Way does not take bookings due to the fact that it only operates under optimal conditions. If you are going up Table Mountain be absolutely sure to pack extra layers as the temperatures on top of the mountain can be surprisingly lower than you expect. If you do happen to be hiking up Table Mountain then be sure to let your hotel or guesthouse know when you can be expected back, take caution as the weather can change quickly. Ideally we recommend that you hike in the company of a guide, contact your Rhino Africa consultant to arrange this.
