Spanning from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route is a beautifully scenic region, from the semi-desert of the Karoo and forests of Tsitsikamma to pretty seaside towns and white sandy beaches. And it’s great for families! Visit the Garden Route section on our website.

Wine, Whales and Great Whites

White Sharks Project - header

I spent an hour in a cage in the ocean surrounded by no less than ten voracious sharks and I can report that while I still have a healthy fear of these predators of the sea, I’ve come to respect them and indeed to marvel at their amazing grace, power and supreme biological engineering…

We recommend: Shamwari Game Reserve

Eagles Crag boma

I recently visited the Shamwari (meaning “friend” in Shona) Game Reserve on the Garden Route and was lucky enough to stay in two of their seven luxury lodges. We left the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, also in the Eastern Cape, and took a back road short cut to access Shamwari. It was about an hour’s drive past scenic bush and other game reserves.

Try something different and go on a Garden Route safari!

Spot the Big 5 on safari on the Garden Route

I recently headed up from Cape Town to the Garden Route to film the lodges and safaris on offer in this part of southern Africa. Firstly, I must say, flying from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for this self-drive safari experience along the Garden Route and its surrounds is definitely the best way to go. Once in PE, the lodges are all very close together and easily accessible. And you don’t need a 4×4… although it would be nice.

It’s Whale Season!

Humpbacks and Southern Right Whales come to play off the Garden Route coast

Whale Season officially kicks off in South Africa in June and runs until December each year. But nature doesn’t always work to the clock… It showed this when the long-awaited marine giants rocked up behind the breakers at Die Plaat in De Kelders, in Walker Bay, as early as April this year. They’ve been pretty [...]

International Children’s Day – Take your kids on safari!

Children on Safari in Africa

While ‘Children’s Day’ is celebrated on various days in many different countries, ‘International Children’s Day‘ is celebrated on the 1st of June. According to the fountain of knowledge, Wikipedia; “The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland proclaimed June 1 to be International Children’s Day in 1925.” There’s also ‘Universal Children’s Day’ [...]

Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees

This past weekend saw the start of a truly South African experience and after a trek and a half I arrived in time to see the sights and hear the sounds of the Klein Karoo Nationale Kunste Fees (in English, the Little Karoo National Arts Festival). Held in Oudtshoorn, it is a celebration of the [...]

And there’s no better place to enjoy these natural pleasures than Hermanus… Located in a small [...]

Memoirs from the Cape Royale and Gondwana Game Reserve…

View from suite at Cape Royale, Cape Town

“Oh Wow, they are Massive!” There’s a scene in one of my favourite movies where the assistant to the high-powered lead actress is given a landslide of impossible tasks and errands. She repeats a very simple mantra in order to convince herself that the hellish to-do list is all worth it in the end; “I [...]

Rhino Africa in the News

Rhino Poaching is counter productive to sustainable tourism

It’s been a busy few weeks at Rhino Africa HQ – David has been taking a well earned break hopping the Greek Islands and we’ve sent two groups up to the Kruger to research and review some of SA’s finest game lodges. But while the commercial side of Rhino Africa has been doing its thing, [...]

Golf Holiday on the Garden Route

Golfing on the Garden Route

Terence is the glue behind Rhino Africa. The keratin in our Rhino horn. He’s the “I” in our IT department and the “hand” in our handyman. After being part of the crack squad that organised David’s 40th birthday at the Mount Nelson, Terence took a well deserved break. While Tiger Woods was distracted by [...]

Niki visits Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Klein Karoo

Sanbona

Now I was dying to see for myself what Sanbona Dwyka Lodge was all about since I had heard so much about it! After our stay in Swellendam on the Route 62, we made our way through the Tradouw’s pass to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. This is a big reserve at around 54 000 hectares [...]
