Wine, Whales and Great Whites

White Sharks Project - header

I spent an hour in a cage in the ocean surrounded by no less than ten voracious sharks and I can report that while I still have a healthy fear of these predators of the sea, I’ve come to respect them and indeed to marvel at their amazing grace, power and supreme biological engineering…

The Twelve Apostles Hotel

Camps Bay Hotels

A Seaside Soiree We bunked off early yesterday and made our way to The Twelve Apostles Hotel for sundowners and canapés. This is the place where earth, sea and sky meet. We often forget that we have this little thing called the ocean in Cape Town since we spend so much of the day in [...]

Wining & Dining at the Vineyard Hotel

Take a dip in the swimming pool

The Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town’s southern suburbs is not a place to pull up to in a battered, borrowed car that hums so loudly under the hood dogs in Athlone growl back in reply. A car with wipers that won’t switch off and wave furiously even on a rainless day, scraping the glass like fingernails on a blackboard. I probably should have walked.

On your marks, get set, Summer!

Cape Town Summer

Cape Town burst into life this weekend as the sun came out and temperatures hit 30 degrees. Summer is well on its way as Cape Town gets ready to welcome International visitors. Peak season in Cape Town runs from November until March when the Mother City really comes into its own. There can be few [...]

Galbi: A one-of-a-kind Horny Grazer experience

galbi2 copy

One of our lovely colleagues and a dear friend of mine celebrated her 30th birthday recently and I was fortunate enough to snag an invite to the celebrations! I’m ashamed to say I did not check the invite clearly or I would have known what the evening had in store. The first line read “bubbly & canapés at Mannabay”, and I read no further; I was already sold! Whatever else happened after that was simply icing on an already gorgeous cake.

The Horny Grazer reviews: Van Hunks

Van Hunks

Van Hunks is the name of a local legend in Cape Town who had a smoking contest with the devil. He lost. But legend has it that the cloud of tobacco smoke the two left formed the “table-cloth” – the famous white cloud that spills over Table Mountain when the south-easter wind blows in summer. It is said that when that happens, Van Hunks and the Devil are at it again.

“Come quickly! I am tasting stars!” — Dom Perignon, after his first sip of champagne My weekend MannaBay is the guesthouse that ruins it for all other guesthouses. Once you’ve stayed in this luxurious guesthouse in the heart of Cape Town, it’s very hard for any other to impress you. After several years of reviewing [...]

What’s On Eatery – A Horny Grazer Review

Whats On Eatery - Cape Town

“The belly rules the mind.“  ~Spanish Proverb What’s on at the What’s on Eatery?! When my friend first mentioned the name I thought he was saying “What’s on the tree?” in pigeon Zulu. Why was my friend banging on about this place? Was it a Christmas shop selling African baubles? In which case, er, no [...]

Brad’s Grill – Great Steakhouse

The best steak in town!

I do mean it when I say, this was the best steak I have ever had. I cant recall having a better steak anywhere. It even beats the one I had at 1800 in Greenpoint. It’s no wonder that Brad’s Grill in Claremont has people coming back again and again for its carnivorous offerings.

Top Markets in Cape Town

Munch on a range of baked tart delights

It’s very difficult to be bored in Cape Town. Despite the city’s nickname ‘Slaapstad’ – the sleepy city – it’s much more like New York. A city that never sleeps. Not in summer, not in winter. There’s so much to get up to here! The nickname comes more from the slow pace of locals and the [...]

Salt Restaurant: A review

There's a varied menu of wines to suit any taste

Worth its salt “At sea a fellow comes out. Salt water is like wine, in that respect” – Herman Melville One of my favourite dining spots in Cape Town is without a doubt the Salt Restaurant, on the coast in Bantry Bay. It’s expensive; so you know there shouldn’t be any, you know, slip-slop riff-raff. [...]

Among the delights of summer, picnics to the woods. – George Brandes Emily Moon River Lodge in Plettenberg Bay is one of Rhino Africa’s favourite hotels on South Africa’s Garden Route, totally worth the visit. Recently a little piece of Emily Moon made its way to Cape Town and now, if you’re in the city, [...]
