Meet Judy Burrows

Meet our travel consultant, Judy. As someone with over 16 years in the travel industry, she’s definitely the person to talk to about booking a trip to Africa! When she’s not working, she enjoys camping and being in the outdoors – which Cape Town has lots of. Find out more about her in our Meet The Team section online.

1. What do you love most about your job? I love the country that I live in! I wake up every day thinking that I live in the most beautiful part of the world. It’s rich in history, culture and beauty and I love sharing that with the world.

2. What are your top 3 destinations you have visited in Africa?

  • Zambia – I love the untamed feel of Zambia and nothing beats a walking safari there. It gives you a chance to really get close with nature.
  • Botswana – It is such a diverse country and offers a true wildlife experience. It is especially wonderful in the rainy season (November – March) with the dramatic thunderstorms in the background and the smell of wild sage in the air once all is calm again. It is truly a country that touches all the senses.
  • Kruger National Park – It’s simply the best place to go on safari where you are almost guaranteed to see all of the Big 5.

3. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten on your travels? I’m not very daring when it comes to eating strange things, but I have given in and tried mopani worms at a boma dinner in Victoria Falls.

4. What is your most memorable safari moment? There are so many exciting stories, but the one moment that stands out the most for me is a ride in a mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) in the Okavango Delta. As you glide through the reeds, all you hear is the sound of nature around you. My favourite moment was when I heard the swishing of a herd of red lechwe as they ran across the water.

5. What is the one thing you have to take with you on every trip? A good camera. I’m not the world’s best photographer, but it’s all about capturing those unforgettable memories.

6. Where in the world do you still want to travel to? Malawi! I would love to visit the Lake of Stars Festival.

7. If you could go on a dream safari with anyone at all, who would it be and why? My parents, because they haven’t had the chance to travel as freely around the country as I have. I would love to take them to some of the beautiful places I have been to one day.

8. What is your favourite (city/beach) hotel to recommend to clients travelling to Africa? La Residence in Franschhoek. I haven’t found another property that comes close to it as far as accommodation and level of service is concerned.

9. What are the top 3 safari lodges that you recommend to clients travelling to Africa?

  • It’s not really a safari lodge, but Tongabezi in Zambia. Besides the location, which is on the Zambezi River, Tongabezi has the friendliest staff.  Everyone greets you warmly and will ask you how was your day or just generally chat to you. It is truly a place where you arrive as a stranger but leave as a friend.
  • Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp in South Luangwa – The lodge overlooks a floodplain and often you don’t have to leave the camp to see wildlife – there is plenty of activity happening just in front of the lodge.
  • Sanctuary Chief’s Camp in Botswana – It has the best game viewing in the Okavango Delta.

10. Where is your favourite place to eat in Cape Town? Nobu at the One&Only Hotel – it has the best sushi in town.
