We recommend: Shamwari Game Reserve

Eagles Crag boma

I recently visited the Shamwari (meaning “friend” in Shona) Game Reserve on the Garden Route and was lucky enough to stay in two of their seven luxury lodges. We left the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, also in the Eastern Cape, and took a back road short cut to access Shamwari. It was about an hour’s drive past scenic bush and other game reserves.

Wining & Dining at the Vineyard Hotel

Take a dip in the swimming pool

The Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town’s southern suburbs is not a place to pull up to in a battered, borrowed car that hums so loudly under the hood dogs in Athlone growl back in reply. A car with wipers that won’t switch off and wave furiously even on a rainless day, scraping the glass like fingernails on a blackboard. I probably should have walked.

Try something different and go on a Garden Route safari!

Spot the Big 5 on safari on the Garden Route

I recently headed up from Cape Town to the Garden Route to film the lodges and safaris on offer in this part of southern Africa. Firstly, I must say, flying from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth for this self-drive safari experience along the Garden Route and its surrounds is definitely the best way to go. Once in PE, the lodges are all very close together and easily accessible. And you don’t need a 4×4… although it would be nice.

On your marks, get set, Summer!

Cape Town Summer

Cape Town burst into life this weekend as the sun came out and temperatures hit 30 degrees. Summer is well on its way as Cape Town gets ready to welcome International visitors. Peak season in Cape Town runs from November until March when the Mother City really comes into its own. There can be few [...]

World Rhino Day 2011 – United Against Poaching

World Rhino Day march

A rhino is dying every 22 hours. The poaching has to stop now! This was the message promoted by Rhino Africa and friends outside Parliament in Cape Town today to mark the second annual World Rhino Day. Several hundred people attended the event including representatives from the press and media.

A Mozambican holiday at Marlin Lodge

Hop along on a boat ride

With a visit to Mozambique long overdue and the easiest connection from Kruger without going back to Johannesburg being with Federal Air via Kruger Airport direct to Vilancoulos, the Bazaruto Archipelago soon became our destination of choice. Let’s get the unpleasantness out of the way – prepare yourself for the Federal Air flight, but rest assured the azure waters of Mozambique await and the frustration of getting there makes it more than worthwhile.

A visit to Jamala Madikwe Royal Safari Lodge

Look out for lightning

As the very important Rhino Africa IT Manager, I don’t get to away on holiday too often. Ok, that’s a lie. Because I work for the best company in the world, where I can justify a spectacular African holiday as work. An educational. Sussing out our suppliers. Recently Justine (who works in our Rhino Tripping department) and I went on a pretty special African safari stay at Jamala Madikwe Royal Safari Lodge in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve. We stayed for only two nights but could happily still be there.

Galbi: A one-of-a-kind Horny Grazer experience

galbi2 copy

One of our lovely colleagues and a dear friend of mine celebrated her 30th birthday recently and I was fortunate enough to snag an invite to the celebrations! I’m ashamed to say I did not check the invite clearly or I would have known what the evening had in store. The first line read “bubbly & canapés at Mannabay”, and I read no further; I was already sold! Whatever else happened after that was simply icing on an already gorgeous cake.

Sian’s Zambian Experience – daunting but worth it!

Sian Visits Zambia

I was fortunate enough to join Katja from Sanctuary Retreats on a trip to South Luangwa in Zambia. We enjoyed one night at Chichele Presidential Lodge, popped into Puku Ridge and then spent two nights at Zebra Plains. Travelling from Cape Town is hectic. I would certainly not recommend it. Leaving from Johannesburg will lighten the load a bit but, even easier from Livingstone as you can fly direct into Lusaka and then a quick flight onto Mfuwe.

It’s Arbor Week

This Indian Ocean island's baobab tree is a favourite of ours

We’ve been so caught up with rhinos and planning our World Rhino Day event that we haven’t had time to pay attention to the other stars of this week – trees! Arbor Week runs from 1-7 September in South Africa. We’re great fans of trees – sleeping in luxury treehouses, photographing great baobabs, watching leopards lounging on their branches, canoeing past big leafy ones bustling with pretty tweeting winged creatures, and more. So in celebration, read on…

World Rhino Day 2011 – Thursday 22 September 2011

Come down and join us this year too

After a hugely successful awareness raising campaign in 2010, we’re aiming even higher in 2011. With the momentum from the devastating recent events at Aquila Private Game Reserve we are planning an enormous show of force outside Parliament in Cape Town.
