DAY 1: Kigali

Arrive at Kigali Airport, where you will meet a representative of Thousand Hills Expeditions and be transferred to the Serena Hotel.

DAY 2: Nyungwe Forest

After an early breakfast, you will drive 136km south with a stop at the traditional seat of the monarchy. Visit the Royal Palace at Nyanza which has been restored to its 19th century state using only traditional materials. Continue to the university town of Butare where you will visit the National Museum which houses perhaps the best ethnographic collection in East and Central Africa. Lunch in Butare and then proceed with a 130km drive to Nyungwe Forest.

DAY 3: Nyungwe Forest

This morning you will walk deep into Nyungwe Forest to track chimpanzees and come face-to-face with your closest relatives. This can be a challenging affair as the chimps move quickly through the trees and you need to keep up with them! In addition you can spot the Colobus Monkey, other primates, a magnificent selection of birds and the plants. You will then return to Gisakura Guest House for lunch and enjoy an afternoon nature walk in the Nyungwe Forest.

DAY 4: Kinigi - Mountain Gorillas Nest

After breakfast you will take a tour of the tea plantation after which you will be transferred to Kamembe for your flight to Kigali (flights are on the following days - Tue, Thur, Sat, Sun). After lunch in Kigali, you will be transferred 129km North to Kinigi, where you will have the opportunity to get up and close with the rare mountain gorillas!

DAY 5: Kinigi - Mountain Gorillas Nest

You will be briefed by your trackers/guides for your trek to look for the Golden Monkeys. Your driver will take you to the starting point of the trek and wait for your return. We then drive you back to Mountain Gorillas Nest where you will enjoy a leisurely lunch.

After lunch we take a scenic drive to twin lakes Ruhondo and Burera.

DAY 6: Mountain Gorillas and Lake Kivu

After an early breakfast at 06:00 you will head to the park offices for the highlight of your trip - going to see the Mountain Gorillas.

At 07:00 at the park offices, you will be allocated a gorilla group followed by a briefing from the trackers/guides for the group you have been allocated. After your briefing you will go to the starting point of your trek. After a magical hour with the gorillas you will return to the base where your driver will be waiting for you.

We then drive further North to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu where you can spend the afternoon at your leisure swimming in the lake or in the hotel pool. Lunch by own arrangements.

DAY 7: Back to Kigali

After breakfast, we return to Kigali. Lunch under own arrangements.
This afternoon, you will be taken for a city tour around Kigali. The tour includes the Genocide Memorial Museum in Gisozi and the craft centre and other city highlights. Dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 8: Departure

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for departure or your onward travel arrangements - we are always happy to assist.
